Susan Abeln, Vice President Workers’ Compensation, brings more than 30 years experience in the healthcare industry to her role spearheading workers’ compensation cost containment efforts and loss control.  Ms. Abeln is dedicated to helping healthcare organizations reduce the frequency and severity of their work related injuries. She received her Bachelor of Science degree with honors from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; her graduate degree with honors in Health Policy also University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds the Associate in Risk Management designation from the Insurance Institute of America. Ms. Abeln is a licensed physical therapist, certified Field Safety Representative and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the American Society of Healthcare Risk Managers, American Society of Quality, American Society of Safety Engineers, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Risk and Insurance Management Society.

Ms. Abeln has been a consultant, widely in the areas of occupational injury management and injury prevention, disability management, return to work, functional outcomes, benchmarking, and workers’ compensation cost containment including extensive work demonstrating return on investment of selected interventions.  Ms. Abeln has written and has lectured nationally and internationally on these issues and authored “Rehabilitation and Disability Management” for the Insurance Institute of America’s curriculum for Associate of Risk Management. She has also been a regular and featured writer for the publication Workers’ Compensation Cost Control published by Quinlan Publishers.
